So interesting - Dick Bruna, as in the Miffy books, started off as an illustrator at A.W Bruna & Son, the grand Dutch publishing house founded by his grandfather. The grandson had no interest in publishing and hated the idea of joining the company, but did so reluctantly after his father allowed him to leave school on the condition he joined the family firm.

In the early Fifites, A.W. Bruno launched a new series of mass-market paperbacks, the Black Bear imprint, which Dick illustrated. The story in full, with lots more images, is here. The Dick Bruna House in Utrecht has a permanent collection of Bruna's work. Found via @sonofkane.

I write books, and things for The Sunday Times. But I wanted a place to stick other stuff I like, and Posterous is unbelievably easy to set up. So here we are. Yet another work-avoidance strategy by me. You can follow me on Twitter, too - I'm @indiaknight. I know, right? The interwebs: where the fun never ends.
