I love the idea of Damian Barr's
Reading Weekends, which run throughout the year. Designed to be 'obscenely relaxing', you get lavishly fed and watered, put up in a gorgeous Georgian farmhouse -
Tilton in East Sussex, former home of John Maynard Keynes - and then you cosy up on a sofa and read, or chat to the other people (who I'm assured are invariably excellent eggs - Damian is a beady sort), or play Scrabble, or stare into space, or go for a walk. It sounds bliss. It *is* bliss, according to
this piece in the Guardian.
There's bibliotherapy from a
School of Life expert, bedtime stories, a literary dinner with a well-known and very well-picked author (the next one is with David Nicholls, who wrote
One Day, but unfortunately it's fully booked). It's 'a holiday that's all about books', in the company of people who like reading. There are ten bedrooms (twins, triples and doubles). All info and prices from the website; booking info
here.
If you can't make it to Sussex, Barr also runs Shoreditch House's
Literary Salon, which you can attend without being a member of the club.
